Technology to Prevent Trafficking
At Theron Humanitarian, we combined AI and HI (artificial intelligence and human intelligence) to join forces to prevent and combat human trafficking.
Combining Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Human Intelligence (HI) is an increasingly recognized strategy to combat the pandemic of human trafficking, which affects an estimated 50 million people worldwide. This approach leverages the speed and data-processing capabilities of AI alongside the critical thinking, ethical judgment, and empathy of human experts.
Key aspects of this combined approach include:
- AI-Powered Detection: AI tools are used to scan massive amounts of online data—including dark web sites and encrypted apps—to identify patterns, recruitment tactics, and suspicious activity, which are then analyzed by human investigators.
- Targeted Interventions: AI can help analyze online commercial sex advertisements, extracting language patterns to identify victims and traffickers, allowing law enforcement to act faster.
- Human Intelligence (HI) Oversight: Human expertise is critical for validating AI findings, addressing ethical concerns, mitigating bias, and navigating the nuances of human rights, ensuring technology is not used for wrongful surveillance.
- Survivor Support: AI is used to create interactive, trauma-informed digital platforms that offer resources and help, which are then refined by professionals to better serve survivors.
- Preventative Data Analysis: By analyzing data on migration, housing, and economic policies, AI helps identify high-risk areas, allowing for proactive, community-based prevention strategies.
Organizations, such as the International Rescue Committee (IRC) and Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE), are implementing this combination to create tools that not only detect trafficking but also empower survivors. The ultimate goal is to move from reactive measures to proactive prevention and effective, ethical, and compassionate intervention.
